Since 1998, I.R.I.S. has integrated its I.R.I.S. OCR solutions into HP scanning software and currently embeds OCR directly into the HP CM8060/CM8050 Color MFP with Edgeline Technology. Without having to install anything themselves, customers can simply scan their documents, select the right export format and the proper language, and their document will be sent directly to the chosen destination (email, folder, FTP or HTTP). In addition to the standard file type attachment (such as JPG, TIFF, MIFF and PDF), the integrated software will now support “Searchable PDF,” Text, RTF, XML, HTML and XPS. I.R.I.S. OCR supports 137 languages, including Arabic, simplified or traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Hebrew.

I.R.I.S. intelligent High Quality Compression technology™ is designed to convert standard color images into highly‐compressed PDF files with fully searchable text. This function enables the automatic creation of PDF, PDF/A and XPS files with text information included, allowing users to search for documents through simple key words.

PDF/A is a subset of PDF, leaving out PDF features not suited to long-term archiving. Its goal is to address the growing need to electronically archive documents in a way that will ensure preservation of their contents over an extended period of time. This need exists in a growing number of international government and industry segments, including legal systems, libraries, newspapers, regulated industries, and others.

An important new output format is Microsoft’s XML Paper Specification (XPS). Like Adobe's PDF format, XPS is a fixed‐layout document format designed to preserve document fidelity, so that documents look the same and as they are intended on any device.
